Connect Tees Valley and Local Motion work closely with our area’s three main bus operators, Arriva, Stagecoach and Go North East, to promote public transport across the Tees Valley and South Durham.
We’re always keen to support Catch the Bus Week as it gives us the perfect opportunity to get together with the bus operators to raise the profile of bus travel, showcase recent improvements and encourage more people to give their local bus services a try.
For the past two years we have used local bus drivers to front our Catch the Bus Week campaign. Our bus drivers are dedicated to giving customers an outstanding experience so there are no better people to be the faces of the campaign and passengers always seem to enjoy it when their driver is on the side of the bus as well as driving it! This year, we photographed our drivers in a gym setting, ‘gearing up for Catch the Bus Week’. We always try to make our promotions playful and humorous to dispel some of the stereotypical images people have of ‘grumpy bus drivers’.
The campaign was launched in Middlesbrough with a family-friendly event featuring dance troupes, giveaways and the bus drivers who starred in the campaign. We raised the profile of the campaign across the rest of the local authority areas by touring around with our Catch the Bus Week eco coffee cart, saying thank you to passengers by giving away free lattes, cappuccinos and teas. Despite it being the hottest week of the year so far, we still managed to shift a fair number of hot drinks!
The campaign directed people to our Catch the Bus Week website where they were able to find information about local bus services, bus companies’ offers and promotions, and a free prize draw. This year’s campaign has so far generated over 28,000 visits to our Catch the Bus Week website. As ever, it was a pleasure to promote Catch the Bus Week, and we had a great time marking the occasion.
